The Nested Payload Problem

Pylon's API does not return a complete conversation in a single payload. To reconstruct a full ticket, your pipeline must execute multiple calls:

  1. GET /issues — returns high-level ticket metadata and Account ID

If an issue has 50 messages, that's 50 discrete objects that must be extracted, sorted chronologically, and mapped to the target system's comment structure. This is why pipeline runtime scales with message count, not just issue count. An account with 10,000 issues averaging 30 messages each requires 300,000 message-level API calls — the dominant driver of extraction time.

Handling Attachments and Signed URLs

This is the most common failure point in Pylon migrations. When you query a Pylon message containing an attachment (a screenshot pasted into Slack, for example), the API returns a signed Amazon S3 URL that expires — typically within minutes to hours. You cannot map the URL string to your new helpdesk. Your migration middleware must:

  1. Intercept the signed URL from the Pylon message payload
  2. Download the binary file immediately — do not queue it; the URL will expire
  3. Upload the binary file to a temporary staging environment
  4. Upload the binary to the target system's storage endpoint (e.g., Zendesk's /uploads endpoint)
  5. Retrieve the new target-system token or URL
  6. Inject that new reference into the message body before creating the record in the target system
