MIGRATION OVERVIEW

Why teams migrate from Front to Freshchat

The core problem
Migrating from Front to Freshchat is a fundamental architecture shift from an email-first, shared-inbox paradigm to a session-based messaging platform with no native import path, vendor-provided migration wizard, or official connector between the two systems. The data models differ at every level: Front's email threads must be flattened into Freshchat's linear chat sessions, Front's multi-handle contacts must be deduplicated to a single canonical email, and Front's first-class Account objects have no equivalent in standalone Freshchat (requiring Freshdesk Omni for company-level management). Every record—contacts, conversations, messages, attachments, and tags—requires custom extraction via Front's Core API, schema transformation, and loading through Freshchat's v2 REST API, with rate limits on both sides constraining throughput to roughly 40–45 effective requests per minute.
Why this matters for your migration
KEY CHALLENGES

What makes this migration complex

These are the architectural mismatches and technical hurdles specific to a Front to Freshchat migration.

Most Critical

No Native Migration Path

There is no vendor-provided migration wizard, official connector, or built-in import tool between Front and Freshchat, requiring fully custom extraction, transformation, and loading for every data entity.

Blocks all downstream imports if mapped wrong

Conversation Model Incompatibility

Front conversations are email threads containing messages and parallel internal comments, which must be flattened into Freshchat's linear, session-based chat conversation format.

Multi-Handle Contact Deduplication

Front contacts can have multiple email handles, phone numbers, and social accounts, but Freshchat deduplicates on a single email address, requiring canonical email resolution during transformation.

API Rate Limit Constraints

Both Front and Freshchat enforce rate limits starting at approximately 50 requests per minute, meaning a dataset of 50,000 conversations with 8 messages each can take 4–6 days of continuous API execution.

Account Hierarchy Loss

Standalone Freshchat lacks a Company or Account object, so Front's account-based routing and reporting structures are entirely lost unless the team upgrades to Freshdesk Omni.

Custom Field Schema Mismatch

Front supports up to 50 custom fields per category across contacts, accounts, conversations, and more, while Freshchat's custom property availability varies significantly by plan tier and object type.

MIGRATION RISK ASSESSMENT

Every migration risk, already solved

Migration between platforms is full of edge cases. Our engineers have identified every risk from Front to Freshchat and built proven solutions for each one.

High complexity
  • Conversations
Front's threaded email conversations must be flattened into Freshchat's linear chat session model, and Freshchat has no CSV conversation import, making API-based migration the only option for preserving history.
    Solved
  • Attachments
Front's native data export excludes attachments entirely, and large attachments (>25MB) often fail through third-party tools, requiring custom API handling with additional storage and transfer logic.
    Solved
  • Custom Fields
Front supports up to 50 custom fields per category, but Freshchat's custom property limits and available types vary by plan tier, and Zapier integration does not support custom contact fields.
    Solved
  • Accounts / Companies
Standalone Freshchat has no Account or Company object, so Front's entire account hierarchy is lost unless the organization uses Freshdesk Omni.
    Solved
  • Routing Rules / Automations
Front's inbox-based rules have no direct equivalent in Freshchat's channel/group/IntelliAssign routing model and must be manually rebuilt rather than programmatically migrated.
    Solved
Custom engineering
  • Contacts
Contacts can be migrated via API or CSV, but multi-handle contacts must be deduplicated to a single canonical email, risking data loss for contacts with multiple email addresses.
    Handled
  • Tags
Front's tags must be mapped to Freshchat's Labels or Conversation Properties, but Front's data export does not include tags, so API extraction is required.
    Handled
  • Internal Comments
Front's internal comments on conversations can map to Freshchat's private notes, but the parallel threading of comments alongside messages must be serialized into a linear sequence.
    Handled
  • Knowledge Base / FAQs
Front's separate Knowledge Base content must be manually recreated in Freshchat's built-in FAQ system, as there is no automated migration path between the two.
    Handled
Clean transfer
  • Agents / Teammates
Agent records can be recreated in Freshchat, but the Contact/Agent object split in Freshchat's API requires careful handling to avoid conflating the two during migration scripts.

What does an Engineer-led migration mean anyway?

Speed & Accuracy: Our Blended Method

We blend automation (smart scripts, bulk APIs) with human expertise for speed without risk. Our engineers manually check every mapping, validation, and exception.

You get:

  1. Speed of automation for bulk record migration
  2. Precision of engineers verifying integrity and business logic
  3. Pilot migrations and sandbox testing to catch issues early
  4. Real-time validation reports and rollback readiness
Result: 50x faster migrations than manual imports — with near-zero error rates.

Handling the Tricky Tech and API Details

The Front and Freshchat APIs each behave differently, which is where our engineers shine. We build custom logic to handle the data quirks where generic tools typically break.

We handcraft API logic for:

  1. Field mapping and transformation
  2. Pagination, rate-limit handling, and throttling
  3. Preserving conversation threads, attachments, and internal notes
  4. Syncing custom fields, SLAs, and macros without breaking structure
Our scripts: Natively retry failed calls, re-queue large attachments, and ensure data parity.

No Guesswork

We don't just promise smooth migrations—we measure and prove them. Every client receives a Migration Validation Report with all metrics.

Typical results across projects:

  1. 100% record-count parity between your Front data and Freshchat
  2. Zero downtime during staged cutovers
  3. 99.9% attachment integrity (verified via checksum)
  4. Full automation and preservation of all business rules
Our standard: Includes full SLA preservation and 30 days of engineer-assigned support post go-live.

We Adapt to Your Setup (Not the Other Way Around)

No two teams configure Front or Freshchat exactly the same way—with unique automations and data. We customize every migration script to fit your exact workflow, tags, and triggers.

Our engineers adapt for:

  1. Custom fields, ticket forms, and workflows
  2. Multi-brand or multi-language setups
  3. Historical imports and partial (date-based) migrations
  4. Integration re-mapping for CRMs, chat, or feedback tools
The promise: If your data doesn't fit a standard template, we build one just for you.

5 questions
Do I need professional help for this migration?
Yes. Professional help ensures proper field mapping and preservation of relationships between records. Our engineer-led approach catches edge cases that automated tools miss.
Does ClonePartner provide guidance before committing?
Yes. We provide a free consultation and assessment. We'll review your data structure, discuss your requirements, and provide a detailed migration plan and fixed-price quote before you commit to anything.
Do you use an off-the-shelf tool to migrate from Front to Freshchat, or is this built for our data?
It is built for your data. Each migration is a set of custom scripts written for your data model, not a generic import tool. That is also why we start with a sample migration: you see your own records in Freshchat before the full migration is committed.
Can we see a sample of our Front data migrated to Freshchat before the full migration runs?
Yes. We run a sample migration on your own data first, so you can review how your records look in Freshchat before the full migration goes ahead. We run validation scripts to confirm the record counts match your source, and you check the sample against your source records; if a field is missing or mapped wrong, or anything else needs adjusting, we fix it in the migration scripts and re-run the sample as many times as you need. The full migration only runs after you've approved the sample. On projects delivered in phases, each phase gets its own sample migration for you to approve.
Do we need to keep our Front account active during the migration?
Usually, yes. Keep it active until we confirm the migration is complete, including the final delta migration, because we read your data directly from your Front account throughout the project. If your subscription is due to end mid-project, extending it to cover the migration window keeps everything on track, and we tell you when it is safe to cancel. If it has to close sooner, we can pull your data out before it closes and migrate from that copy.

Data & mapping

9 questions
Will the original assignees, message authors and created dates be preserved?
Yes. Created-time metadata is carried across, and so are assignees and message authors who have a user account in Freshchat. Where Freshchat cannot store one of them natively, it is kept as embedded metadata on the migrated record.
If the new system can't natively support an old record type, what are my options?
We handle it case by case. While mapping your data, we identify every record type without a direct counterpart in Freshchat, review sample records from it and propose how it can be represented, based on what Freshchat supports: map it to the closest native object, create a custom field or object, fold it into the parent record as text or a note, attach it as a file, or keep it in a read-only archive. You choose the approach, we write the migration scripts to place the data there, so it comes across in the form you choose instead of being left behind, and you see how it looks in a sample migration before we run the full set.
Will the migration set off automations or send emails or notifications to customers, our team or anyone else?
No. Before the sample or full migration starts, we confirm with you that nothing in Freshchat will send messages about the migrated data: we import with notifications switched off wherever Freshchat allows it, and either pause any automation that could send them for the migration window or give it a condition, such as a suppression tag, that skips migrated records, which lets your live automations keep running for new records. We only proceed once you have confirmed it. If you want anyone told about the move, that message is sent separately, once the migrated data has been checked.
Can you migrate data that Freshchat can't take in through an API?
In many cases, yes. Where something can't be written through an API, we recreate it through Freshchat's user interface where the interface allows it, and where that work is repetitive we script and automate it. We tell you up front which items are handled this way, because recreating them through the interface can add time to the schedule.
What happens if Freshchat requires fields our Front data doesn't have?
We check the destination for required fields your source data cannot fill and bring each one to you before those records are migrated. Together we agree how each one is handled, such as a mapping from an existing field, a default value, or, where Freshchat lets that field be made optional, setting it to not required for the migration so you can make it required again once the migration is complete. The migration then runs with that rule applied, so no records are rejected or left behind.
How will we tell migrated records apart from the ones already in Freshchat?
We can mark every migrated record in Freshchat, for example with a custom checkbox field such as "Migrated from Front", so your team can tell migrated data apart from records created there. We agree the marker with you during scoping so it fits how your team uses Freshchat.
Do internal notes and system-generated notes from Front migrate to Freshchat, or only customer-facing replies?
Internal notes can come across, and so can system-generated notes where Front's API makes them available. During scoping you choose which notes to include, so Freshchat holds the history your team will actually use.
We use a lot of custom fields in Front. Can you map them to Freshchat?
Where Freshchat has a place for them, yes. Each migration is a custom script written for your project, so your custom fields and structure are mapped to Freshchat's model rather than forced through an import template. Where field types differ, such as a value stored as text in Front that Freshchat needs as a number, the script converts it. We agree the mapping with you and prove it on a sample migration before the full run.
Can you combine data from Front and other support tools into one Freshchat account?
Yes. Each tool's data is extracted separately and written into the same Freshchat account. How records from the different tools fit together is settled in the data mapping before the build. The sample migration includes data from every source, so you can check the combined result before the full run.

Timeline & downtime

5 questions
How long does the Front to Freshchat migration take?
Most migrations complete within 1–5 business days, depending on data volume and complexity; very large migrations, such as several hundred thousand records, take longer. We provide a detailed timeline after the initial assessment and can often complete small migrations in under 24 hours.
Will there be downtime when migrating from Front to Freshchat?
No. Our migration process is designed for zero downtime. Front stays fully operational throughout: the bulk migration runs in the background and the cutover is fast, so there is no disruption to your live business operations.
Our team has already started working in Freshchat. Can we still migrate our Front history?
Yes. We take the exact date, time and time zone your team went live as the cutoff, and migrate the history up to that point, so the work already done in Freshchat is left as it is. That go-live moment separates the two systems' records, so we confirm it with you before anything runs.
How long does it take to export a very large ticket history from Front?
Extraction time depends on volume: a history of more than half a million tickets can take several days to pull. Your Front account needs to stay active until extraction is finished, so we confirm its end date with you at the start and plan the schedule around it.
Can we change fields or settings in Front or Freshchat while the migration is running, and is there anything we should switch off?
Mostly yes, and your team can keep working as normal, but leave the fields being migrated as they are, in Front and Freshchat, until the migration, including the final delta, is complete. The field mappings are set before the run starts, so hold off on renaming or removing those fields, and changing a migrated field's options, archiving it, or marking it as required or conditional can stop records from migrating. Where needed, and as agreed with you, we set the matching fields in Freshchat to active, not required and not conditional for the duration of the migration. Other fields can be added or removed in the meantime. Also pause any AI agents, automations or rules in Freshchat that could act on migrated records, so they don't fire on historical records as they arrive; if some must keep running for live work, we can instead agree a condition that makes them skip migrated records. Once the migration is complete, you can switch them back on, restore those field settings and rename fields freely.

Security & access

1 question
Can we whitelist a single IP instead of opening our network to your migration tool?
Yes. All migration traffic runs through a centralized system using one fixed IP, which your IT team can whitelist instead of opening broader network access.

Pricing

1 question
Is migration pricing a flat fee, or does it scale with data volume?
It's a flat fee with no hidden costs. The price we agree with you for your scope is the price you pay, and small variances in the final volume, a bit more or less, are included.

After go-live

6 questions
How do I validate that everything migrated correctly?
Every client receives a Migration Validation Report with comprehensive metrics including record-count comparison, attachment integrity verification via checksum, and full audit logs of the migration run, showing every record created, skipped or failed. If any item didn't come across, the report names each one, the specific reason, and how to bring it across if you want it there. We also offer unlimited sample migrations, so you can check your data before the full migration runs.
What support do you provide after the migration goes live?
At ClonePartner, we consider ourselves your partners in this journey. We take full accountability for your migration's success. Once your migration goes live, we provide 30 days of comprehensive post-migration support as standard, and longer support, such as 60 or 90 days, can be agreed for your project. During this period, we help with anything related to your migrated data, so your migration is a complete success.
Will we get a migration report and a mapping sheet linking old record IDs to new ones?
Yes. We provide a comprehensive migration report along with an ID-mapping sheet that links each old Front record ID to its new ID in Freshchat. This ensures full traceability, simplifies post-migration verification, and helps your team validate that records have been migrated accurately.
After migration, do I contact ClonePartner or the platform's own support if something looks wrong?
ClonePartner is the contact for anything about the migrated data itself. Questions about the platform itself, such as how its features and settings work, go to the platform's own support or to whoever administers it for you.
Can we keep an offline archive of our old Front data?
Yes. The archive is delivered to you as a set of local files: folders holding the ticket data and attachments, plus an HTML file that reads from those folders so you can browse tickets in a web browser. Nothing is hosted on our servers and there is no software to install, so you can store it wherever suits you, such as Google Drive or Box.
Can you keep our CRM updated with support activity after we move from Front to Freshchat?
Yes, where Freshchat's API makes that activity available. We build an ongoing sync on Freshchat's and your CRM's APIs that writes support activity to the right contacts and companies, and you decide what gets logged. It is a separate piece of work from the migration, scoped and priced on its own.
